Taste of the Douro Valley

A masterclass in scenery and in winemaking, Portugal’s Douro Valley is a tapestry of meandering rivers and undulating hillsides, quilted into tightly woven vineyards and dotted with whitewashed quintas. On this guided tour holiday, we start in Porto, explore tiled mansions and cobbled squares, duck across the river into the cellar doors of Vila Nova de Gaia, the centre of Portugal’s port industry.

Trip Outline

Day 1 – Santo Tirso

Join your tour group at the hotel in Santo Tirso.

Hotel Cidnay Santo Tirso (4-star)

Day 2 – Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia

This morning we travel into Porto for a guided tour of the city that lends its name to both the country and the wine. Although its Lisbon that often steals the limelight, Portugal’s second city is in no way second best. On the banks of the river Douro (gold river), Porto is a treasure of a city – historical, charismatic, and eclectic, where forget-me-not-blue tiled façades rub shoulders with colourful street art. We explore pockets of old Porto (including the cathedral) and UNESCO-listed Ribeira, the riverfront historic quarter lined with painted townhouses, jumbled cobbled alleyways and grand neoclassical buildings. In the afternoon when the sun is firmly over the yard arm, we cross the river to Vila Nova de Gaia, the centre of Portugal’s port industry. Tawny, ruby, vintage, white, all the port in the country comes to Gaia to mature in the riverside cellars. There are 60 wine lodges in total, with names familiar to anyone who’s ever perused the top shelf of a British pub, including Taylor’s and Graham’s. We visit a wine lodge to learn about the history, processes, and production.

Hotel Cidnay Santo Tirso (4-star)

Today includes

Excursions & visits: Guided walking tour of Porto, including cathedral entrance (morning)
Visit to a port wine cellar in Vila Nova de Gaia (afternoon)

Day 3 – Amarante – Lamego – Tabuaço

Travelling inland towards the heart of the Douro Region, we make some spectacular stops along the way. We’ll visit Quinta da Aveleda to see this renowned wine estate, before heading to the honey-coloured medieval town of Amarante. Built on a 4th-century BC Roman settlement on the green banks of the River TĂąmega, there’s time to walk across the Ponte SĂŁo Gonçal bridge, where heroic locals fought off the French in the Napoleonic wars, and shop for souvenirs, embroidery, and linens in the main street. Driving into the vine-covered hills of the Douro Alto, we stop for a guided walk of the medieval town of Lamego. Like much of Europe’s Russian Doll architecture, with churches built on temples and palaces built on forts, Lamego fell in and out of Muslim and Christian control. The effects of which we see in the Moorish castle, Gothic cathedral, and Renaissance villas. The jewel in the crown is the Nossa Senhora dos RĂ©medios, a beautiful rococo and baroque church with sweeping steps decked in azulejos (Portuguese tiles). We then continue to our hotel in Tabuaço, a village surrounded by the terraces, vines, and slopes of the Douro Valley.

Douro Palace Hotel Resort & Spa (4-star)

Today includes

Excursions & visits: Visit to Quinta da Aveleda (morning)
Visit to Amarante (morning)
Tour of Lamego town and the Nossa Senhora dos RĂ©medios (afternoon)

Day 4 – Douro River Cruise – PinhĂŁo

We head to Pinhão, a pretty village on the curve of the river where there’s time to explore independently and grab some lunch before boarding our river cruise. Draped across the riverbanks like a patchwork emerald quilt, we spend a lazy afternoon sipping wine and cruising past the pine-forests and wine terraces of the Douro Region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with an excellent vintage, boasting over 2,000 years of winemaking. On our way back, we’ll make a stop at the Quinta de São Luiz for the chance to taste some of their products.

Douro Palace Hotel Resort & Spa (4-star)

Today includes

Excursions & visits: Douro River cruise (afternoon)
Quinta de SĂŁo Luiz wine tasting (afternoon)

Day 5 – RĂ©gua – Pocinho – Carvalhal

There are few experiences more idyllic than drinking wine in the sun-drenched vineyards of the Douro Valley. But the area has even more in its wheelhouse, including its scenic railway. Leaving the town of RĂ©gua, we trundle our way through the valley as the landscape reveals perfectly plaited vineyards dotted with cypress trees and whitewashed quintas. Disembarking in Pocinho, we travel through pretty medieval villages to Carvalhal, a quiet village on the edge of the valley.

Hotel Mira Corgo (4-star)

Today includes

Excursions & visits: Train journey through the Douro Valley (morning)

Day 6 – Carvalhal

Today is at leisure to enjoy the spa and pool at the hotel. Or you can choose to take an optional tour around the narrow streets, white balconied buildings and bell towers of Viseu, including entrance to its highlight, the Museu Nacional Grão Vasco. Although virtually unknown to travellers, Viseu has impressive historical credentials that go back to the Iron Age. Changing hands through Roman, Visigoth and Moorish occupation, with the occasional raids from Spanish Castilian troops, today it’s a peaceful and laid back city with a great arts scene and beautiful flower-filled squares and churches.

Hotel Mira Corgo (4-star)

Day 7 – Carvalhal

Today is free or you can choose an optional excursion to Vila Real’s stunning Palacio do Mateus. A near perfect example of baroque architecture, if the ornate balustrade and elaborate spires look familiar, it’s because you’ve been eyeing up too many bottles of rosĂ©. The palace image features on the distinctive flask-shaped bottles of Mateus wine. You’ll continue to the Quinta da Pacheca for a guided tour and wine tasting experience.

A local guide will take us on a walking tour of the town, introducing us to the highlights (and a few hidden gems as well). It’s a great way to get your bearings and work out what you might like to come back and see more of during the rest of the week.

Day 3 – Giardini Naxos

You’ve got the day to yourself. Take it easy at the hotel, or spend some time exploring Giardini Naxos. If you fancy heading back up to Taormina, the bus stop is a five-minute walk from the hotel. Go for lunch at a trattoria hidden in the backstreets or maybe treat yourself to a fruity granita (Sicilian-style sorbet), traditionally enjoyed with a flaky brioche pastry. The buzzing Corso Umberto I is Taormina’s main street, running between the town’s two gates, Porta Messina and Porta Catania. It’s lined with designer boutiques and gift shops displaying handmade lace, colourful artworks and Sicilian delicacies. After you’ve had a wander, relax in Piazza IX Aprile, with its checkerboard floor, baroque church and Etna views; or in the pretty Villa Comunale gardens. For a flavour of Sicily’s Greek history (and more fantastic views), the Teatro Antico di Taormina is well worth a visit.

Hotel Naxos Beach Resort (4-star)

Day 4 – Radicepura Garden Festival – Acireale

The botanical gardens at Radicepura play host to a biennial festival that celebrates garden design and landscape architecture. We’ll spend the morning enjoying a guided tour around some of the beautifully created gardens. Admire all sorts of Mediterranean plants and flowers, breathe in the scent of herbs and fruit trees, and look out for the quirky artworks dotted throughout. While we’re here, we’ll pause for a tasting experience of some locally produced drinks. After free time in nearby Acireale, a baroque town set on a hillside, our route back to Giardini Naxos takes us via the seaside town of Aci Castello, where you’ll have time for a wander and perhaps an espresso at one of the cafĂ©s.

Set on an island that juts out into the Ionian Sea, it was first settled by the Greeks some 2,700 years ago. A local guide will lead us through the maze of narrow streets, lined with countless cafĂ©s, restaurants and – of course – gelaterias. We’ll emerge onto Piazza del Duomo, edged by beautiful baroque palazzi all carved from creamy local limestone. As the name suggests, the square’s centrepiece is its Duomo – our guide will show us its treasures. After some free time, we’ll enjoy a harbour boat trip to allow us to admire Ortigia from the water.

The Southern Shores of Lake Garda

The vast shoreline of Lake Garda is dotted with pretty villages and gleaming resorts. But in the lake’s southern basin sits the most picturesque town of all – Sirmione, the base for our Lake Garda tours. Known as the ‘Pearl of Lake Garda’, it’s embellished with a 13th-century castle and calming hot springs. From here, we’ll twist along the winding roads to the mighty Dolomites.

Trip Outline

Day 1 – Lake Garda

Join your tour group at the hotel in Sirmione, on the shores of beautiful Lake Garda.

Hotel Du Parc, Sirmione (4-star)

Day 2 – Sirmione

Today you’ll savour your first taste of Lake Garda. The lake’s wind-ruffled waters and warm, colourful town of Sirmione are simply captivating. Today is a free day to explore Sirmione under your own steam. Perhaps visit one of Lake Garda’s oldest settlements, which has evidence of fishermen living in stilt houses that date back to the Stone Age. The beautiful setting has made this area a popular place ever since. Scaliger Castle is an incredibly well maintained 13th-century fortification; why not walk the drawbridge and climb the numerous steps to the castle ramparts to view the land and the lake as the medieval guards once did? Or experience a more relaxed side of the town’s history with a visit to the Roman thermal baths. Alternately, visit the Grotto of Catullus to walk amongst the remains of northern Italy’s largest Roman villa.

Hotel Du Parc, Sirmione (4-star)

Day 3 – The Dolomites

We’ll drive through breathtaking narrow gorges as we head to Lake Carezza, a small Dolomite mountain lake which reflects a rainbow of colours, giving it the second name ‘Lec de Ergobando’. It is said the rainbow was created by a magician who admired the beautiful mermaid who hides within these waters. We journey to stunning Bolzano, where we can take the short cable car over hilly vineyards and valleys to Soprabolzano. We’ll continue exploring the Renon plateau via Ritten’s narrow-gauge railway. Then we’re in for a treat as we round off our day with a slice of local apple strudel and a cup of coffee.

Hotel Du Parc, Sirmione (4-star)

Today includes

Excursions & visits: Excursion to the Dolomites, including cable car (all day)

Day 4 – Verona

Verona is best known as the setting of Romeo and Juliet’s love-struck tragedy, but beyond the Renaissance romance Verona is a bustling and beautiful centre. Its heart is dominated not by Juliet’s balcony, but the incredible 1st-century Roman Amphitheatre which still hosts the annual Verona Opera Festival, as well as concerts from world-famous music artists. Entering the centre of Verona, we take a guided walk past numerous Roman and Medieval remains such as Piazza Brá, the main square which is surrounded by magnificent palaces and the Roman Amphitheatre, and holds a statue of Vittorio Emanuele II, the first ruler of Unified Italy. You may also visit the perfectly preserved Roman Mercato Vecchio and Piazza delle Erbe, Verona’s commercial centre in the Middle Ages where souvenirs are still sold, or the Scaliger tombs, where the prominent Scala family rest within impressive monuments of Gothic architecture. And of course, we will see Juliet’s balcony. We’ll also enjoy some free time before we return to our hotel this afternoon.

Excursions & visits: Excursion to Verona including morning guided walking tour (all day)

Day 5 – Sirmione

Fill your day as you wish. Perhaps with sightseeing in Sirmione or enjoy a lovely stroll along the banks of Lake Garda.

Home to a rich history of art and wealth and a wonderland of winding canals, higgledy bridges and backstreets; Venice is iconic and we start in perhaps one of the most photographed squares country-wide. We take a walk with a guide through the historic centre and get to know the alleys and the canals. You have the rest of the day to make your own discoveries – take a romantic gondola trip through the canals, or maybe take a boat trip to admire the more prominent islands of this intricate archipelago and their significant sights. Explore the city’s cobblestone streets and you’ll find fabulous palaces, or churches decorated with priceless art and the colourful Rialto market, or climb to the top of St Mark’s iconic Bell Tower for some of the most incredible views over the city.

Considered the most important town on the lake, Riva has an interesting historic centre with an Austrian flavour, long beaches and a beautiful mountainous backdrop. After time to explore, we cross the lake by ferry to Limone, the most picturesque village on the lake and spend the rest of the afternoon in this town, forever associated with its old lemon groves (although the name derives from the Latin for ‘boundary’, reflecting the town’s history).

In the Footsteps of Livingstone

Following in Doctor Livingstone’s footsteps, we have some pretty big explorer shoes to fill. We manage it by combining two of the world’s greatest natural wonders – Victoria Falls and Chobe National Park. Exploring by air, boat and 4WD, we get closer to nature – cruising along the banks of the Zambezi past bathing elephants, viewing herds of giraffe from the skies, and criss-crossing savannahs in search of the Big Five.

Trip Outline

Day 1 – Victoria Falls

Join your tour group at the lodge, overlooking Zambezi National Park. Grab a drink on the deck as dusk draws in, and wait for the wildlife come to you. Voted as one of the ‘Great Bars of the World’, the bar overlooks a natural waterhole, whose nightly patrons include thirsty elephant, buffalo and kudu.

Victoria Falls Safari Lodge (5-star)

Day 2 – Victoria Falls

We start out on a high with a day at Victoria Falls – one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Discovered by Livingstone in 1855, the pre-colonial name of ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ (the smoke that thunders) perfectly describes this force of nature. A mile-wide curtain of water freefalls down the rockface for almost a quarter of a mile, causing mists that can be seen from up to 12 miles away. After a guided walk stopping at different viewpoints around the falls, we take to the water for a sundowner cruise along the Zambezi River. The calm before the cascade, the water at the top of the falls is slow and meandering – with hippo, crocodile, elephant and giraffe coming to the water’s edge to drink.

Victoria Falls Safari Lodge (5-star)

Today includes

Excursions & visits: Talk on David Livingstone and Victoria Falls guided walk (morning)
Sundowner cruise on the Zambezi (afternoon)

Day 3 – Mpisi Village

Today we visit Mpisi, a local rural village near Victoria Falls where we get an insight into traditional life – learning about indigenous customs, generations-old farming methods, medicine and healing. The afternoon is at leisure back at the lodge.

Victoria Falls Safari Lodge (5-star)

Today includes

Excursions & visits: Visit to a traditional village (morning)

Day 4 – Kasane

Crossing the border into Botswana, we arrive at Kasane – the gateway for our Chobe National Park tour. Our home for the next seven nights is located on the tranquil banks of the Chobe River. With monkeys, kudu and countless species of bird on our doorstep, it’s the perfect base to relax and watch the wildlife from the riverbanks after a day exploring the park.

Chobe Safari Lodge (4-star)

Day 5 – Chobe National Park

Chobe was Botswana’s first national park, and the overflowing tributaries, lily-strewn waterways and miles of floodplains are home to Africa’s greatest concentration of wildlife – including the largest elephant population on earth. On our first game drive into this pristine and protected wilderness, keep a lookout for lion, elephant, giraffe, buffalo and antelope.

Chobe Safari Lodge (4-star)

Today includes

Excursions & visits: Game drive in Chobe National Park (morning)

Day 6 – Chobe National Park

Up with the birdsong, this morning we cruise along the river to spot yawning pods of hippo, basking crocodile and herds of bathing elephant. A paradise for birdwatchers, Chobe is home to more than 450 species – including heron, stork, jacanas and bee-eaters. Look out for small oxpeckers as they hitch a ride and a free meal on the back of thick-skinned hippos.

Chobe Safari Lodge (4-star)

Today includes

Excursions & visits: River cruise in Chobe National Park (morning)

Day 7 – Chobe National Park

We’ve viewed Chobe’s wildlife from land and water, so today we take to the skies. Following the course of the Chobe River in a light aircraft, we get a unique perspective of Chobe’s waterlogged landscapes. Like ink on litmus paper, the dotted islands and tributaries spread out beneath us – with herds of elephant, giraffe and buffalo visible from up high.

Mabula Game Lodge

Feeling starstruck as we map the constellations and planets above the reserve on a stargazing night. Getting closer to nature spotting the Big Five on seven game drives, two bush walks and a lion tracking experience. Being more than just a visitor – learning about endangered species and the people who protect them. Too often on safaris we feel like we’re ticking boxes. On this in-depth African safari stay we’re based for the full seven nights in a luxury lodge in Mabula Game Reserve – surrounding ourselves in the wildlife and wilderness of South Africa’s bush.

Trip Outline

Day 1 – Mabula Game Reserve

Mabula Game Reserve feels like entering another world. A world that’s home to over 300 species of bird and 60 species of mammal, including the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Plus, their lesser-known friends, the Little Five – elephant shrew, antlion, rhinoceros beetle, buffalo weaver and leopard tortoise. Join your tour group at the lodge.

Day 2 – Mabula Game Reserve

Up with the dawn chorus, we head out on our first game drive. With open-air safari vehicles and expert guides getting us closer to the action, we start to explore the grassy plains, rocky outcrops and watering holes that are home to wildlife including lion, cheetah, warthog, leopard, elephant, rhino, hyena, ostrich and jackal. Plus, the grumpiest of them all – the honey badger. With the best chance of seeing big game at dusk and dawn, we relax back at the lodge and listen to a wildlife talk before heading out on a second game drive this afternoon.

Safari royalty, the power and majesty of these jungle kings is a humbling experience that we’ll remember forever. Day 5 – Mabula Game Reserve

Heading out on a game drive before breakfast, we get to enjoy the stillness of the reserve as the sun warms the savannah and the bush comes alive. Wild animals don’t lie in, so this is an amazing time to see active wildlife before the sun gets too hot and the bigger predators go down for a mid-morning nap. The rest of the day is free before a stargazing experience tonight. Free from light pollution, the inky Southern Hemisphere skies above the reserve are mesmerising. A guide talks us through the planets and constellations and the local myths and legends that surround them.

Day 6 – Mabula Game Reserve

This morning is all about plant power. When faced with elephant ambling past your 4WD and warthog snuffling in the bushes outside your chalet, it’s natural to focus on the fauna. But the flora on the reserve is critical to the survival of both the wildlife and traditions here. Guided by a specialist in local medicine and holistic cultures, this morning’s bush walk focuses on identifying different native plants and their healing properties. This afternoon, we head out on another game drive.

Established by the British, New Delhi is a mix of modern and colonial – with elegant pockets of tree-lined boulevards and blinding-white Georgian colonnades. We drive past the presidential palace of Rashtrapati Bhavan and India Gate – built to commemorate Indian soldiers who died in WWI; stopping to visit Raj Ghat – the final resting place of Gandhi, and UNESCO-listed Qutab Minar – a 13th-century minaret and masterpiece of Indo-Muslim art.

Built in the 1720s, architectural and astronomical accuracy combine to reveal 18 huge stone sculptures, including a 27m-high sundial that can calculate the time to within two seconds. Not bad for a 300-year-old clock. We also drive past Hawa Mahal, ‘The Palace of the Winds’. Built in 1799 so that royal women could watch street processions while in purdah, like tiers on a wedding cake, layer after layer of intricately carved windows create Jaipur’s most recognisable site.

This morning we board the Shatabdi train to Bharatpur and drive into Agra – the final apex of the Golden Triangle. After a traditional thali lunch, we take a guided tour of the city. Agra is best known for the Taj Mahal, and while it remains the star of the show, the former capital of the Mughal empire has more imperial treasures in its trove. We begin at the UNESCO-listed Agra Fort. Begun in 1565 by the great Mughal emperor Akbar, this vast red sandstone fort was finished over successive reigns by his grandson and great-grandson. A proper family home, the finished result is 2.5km long and 21m high. In comparison to its indomitable size, we also visit the nearby tomb of I’timād-ud-Daulah (known as the ‘Baby Taj’) – a royal tomb built in the same style as the Taj Mahal but a fraction of the size. There’s an optional excursion this evening to watch the Mohabbat the Taj show.

Arriving by sunrise to watch the marble walls change from flaming orange to coral and then white, this architectural masterpiece – built by Shah Jahan between 1560-82 in memory of his favourite wife – is spellbinding. Not to mention, a lesson in true love. We grab our photos and take a guided tour before the crowds get too busy. After breakfast back at the hotel, we drive back to Delhi to catch tomorrow’s train to Amritsar.

Day 10 – Amritsar

Amritsar is a city of extremes, where resplendent temples and artificial lakes provide moments of serenity and enlightenment amongst the beeping traffic and full-to-bursting bazaars. This morning’s tour takes us to Jallianwalah Bagh – a memorial to commemorate the Indians who died at the hands of British troops during a demonstration in 1919. We also visit a local bazaar and Durgiana Temple, or the Silver Temple – an elaborately carved Hindu temple. We then admire Amritsar’s crowning glory – the gilded domes and mirrored waters of the Golden Temple – the holiest site in the world for Sikhs. This afternoon we travel to the border town of Wagah to see the changing of the guard – a military ceremony involving Indian and Pakistan troops that’s taken place each evening since 1959. Attended by hundreds, with loud cheering from both sides of the border, it’s quite the spectacle.

On our tour we admire modernist and French-influenced colonial architecture, the magical Rose Garden – a 30-acre garden scented by 50,000 rose bushes, and Sukhana – a boating lake favoured by locals with a view out to the snow-capped Himalayas.

On our Sri Lanka holidays, this introduction to the ‘Land of Serendipity’ reveals mountaintop fortresses, ancient capitals hidden in dense forest and national parks where elephants roam free. Starting and finishing in the island’s capital, Colombo, our Sri Lanka tours journey to Buddhist temples and botanical gardens, stopping to sample some of the world’s best tea along the way. Colombo is Sri Lanka’s commercial centre, a curious mix of eastern tradition and western infiltration. Our morning tour includes a visit to the fort built by the Portuguese. From our coach, we’ll also view the buzzing Pettah bazaar district, where the streets are crammed with stalls and shops. We continue our journey to Habarana, in the heart of the island, where we’ll stay for three nights.

We head to Anuradhapura, ruled by the Sinhalese Kings for over 1,000 years. Star attractions include ancient Buddhist shrines, dagobas (bell-shaped memorials) and pokunas (stone water tanks). We also visit the sacred 2,000-year-old Sri Maha Bodi tree. Later we’ll visit Hiriwadunna, a typical Sri Lankan village, for an introduction to local culture and indigenous farming practices.

Cinnamon Lodge, Habarana (4.5-star)

Day 4 – Sigiriya

Adventure awaits us this morning in Sigiriya, a 182m-high rock plateau on which a 5th-century ruler built a fortress and palace. The spectacular ‘lion rock’ fortress stands majestically over the green jungle. Carved in a niche in the rocks are frescoes of beautiful women. This afternoon you’re free to relax or join an optional excursion to Polonnaruwa, built in the 12th century by King Parakramabahu. The remains of the King’s Palace include shrines, temples, dagobas and the Gal Vihara.

Victorian- and Tudor-style homes line the pretty lake, and tuk-tuks can be found parked beside a red phone box. Tea lovers will be in their element as we tour a plantation, where workers – or ‘pluckers’ – pick each delicate leaf by hand. We’ll see the entire manufacturing process, from grading the tea by quality and size through to its final preparation. Later on, we’ll celebrate the tradition of high tea at our hotel.

We’ve experienced its great cultural centres and legendary Himalayas, today we journey to one of Nepal’s other treasures: Chitwan National Park, a road trip of around six hours. Nepal’s first national park promises some of the best wildlife viewing in Asia; its thick jungle and grassy plains are home to species including the royal Bengal tiger and the one-horned Asian rhino, as well as crocodiles, elephants, and migratory birds. Our base in this natural nirvana is Jagatpur Lodge, an elegant gathering of deluxe guest rooms and balconied wooden pavilions.

Days 7-8 – Chitwan National Park

During your stay you’ll be able to choose from several exciting, included activities including wildlife walks and jeep safaris and guided river tours. All these adventures give you the chance to spot exotic and rare creatures living in their natural habitat. You’ll also meet the local communities who make Chitwan National Park their home and take your seats for a lively cultural show.

Day 9 – Chitwan National Park – Kathmandu

Putting the jungle behind us we follow the road to Kathmandu, a gloriously scenic six-hour-drive past lush, forested valleys, mist-shrouded mountains and terraced rice fields. There’ll be a warm welcome waiting at our Kathmandu hotel, after which there’s time to relax ahead of our final day’s sightseeing.

Day 10 – Kathmandu

Our last full day in Nepal brings us face to face with two of the country’s most sacred and symbolic sites. Pashupatinath straddles the banks of the holy Bagmati River and is Nepal’s oldest and most important Hindu temple complex, whereas beautiful Bouddhanath dominates the skyline with its whitewashed dome, gilded gold tower and fluttering prayer flags. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and are absolute must-sees for visitors to Nepal. This afternoon there’s an optional visit to Patan, an ancient city to the south of Kathmandu – the temples, palaces and courtyards in its Durbar Square are amongst the loveliest in Nepal. Back at the hotel there’s time to freshen up before we step out this evening for a farewell dinner of traditional Nepalese food accompanied by cultural dancing and folk music.

Magnificent Turkey Tour - Istanbul to Antalya

From the ancient streets of Ephesus and the storied halls of Istanbul’s Topkapı Palace, to poignant World War I battlefields, our week-long Turkey tours bring this country’s fascinating past to life. Starting with a city break in Istanbul, we’ll then sweep southwards to Gallipoli and eastwards along the Turkish Riviera, touring Greek theatres, Roman baths and ancient stadia as we go. It’s not all about history, though. Our holidays give you the chance to really experience Turkey, too – sip proper Turkish coffee, enjoy lunch with locals.

Day 2 – Istanbul

A full-day city tour introduces us to the sights and sounds of Istanbul. We’ll travel back thousands of years as we visit Sultanahmet Meydanı, once the sporting and social heart of Constantinople and admire the vast Blue Mosque. Next is the Sunken Cistern, an atmospheric underground reservoir built in the 6th century and held up by more than 300 columns. We’ll finish off our day in the colourful Grand Bazaar. With almost 4,000 shops hawking antiques, carpets, jewellery and more, it’s the biggest souk and the oldest covered market in the world.

Day 3 – Istanbul

This morning, we’ll pay a visit to SĂŒleymaniye Mosque, considered to be the most beautiful imperial mosque in the city. One of the mosque’s outbuildings is home to a display of 14th and 15th-century books, manuscripts and orders of the sultans. Although it’s not open to the public, we’ll have private access to view the collection. Next, we’ll make our way to Misir Carsisi, the Egyptian Spice Bazaar, where spices, herbs and all sorts of dried teas have been sold since the 17th century, and where many locals still shop today. We’ll have time to wander through the warren of stalls, perhaps picking up some fragrant cardamom or saffron to take home. Later, we’ll tour the UNESCO-listed Topkapı Palace Museum. Once home to Ottoman sultans, it’s now filled with treasures including fine art, jewel-encrusted swords, Chinese porcelain, scrolls of delicate calligraphy, and the exquisite Spoonmaker’s Diamond. The complex is as much an attraction as the exhibits though, with peaceful gardens, opulent dĂ©cor and tales of courtiers and concubines. The afternoon is free for you to explore Istanbul at your own pace. If you like, join our relaxing optional Bosphorus cruise.

This area is steeped in history, so our guide will talk us through the importance of the Dardanelles strait and the part it played during the First World War as we go. Arriving at Gallipoli, we’ll tour the battlefields, scene of the aborted Allied invasion of 1915, visiting Cape Helles, Suvla Bay and Anzac Cove. We’ll then cross the strait to Canakkale.

It’s a long but rewarding drive of around six hours today. It takes us to the World Heritage Site of Troy to uncover 4,000 years of history as you stroll around this ancient archaeological site, immortalised in Homer’s epic, ‘The Iliad’. For lunch, we’ll head to the nearby village of Bergama. Splitting into smaller groups, we’ll visit local houses, chatting with our hosts as we enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal. We’ll continue to the Greco-Roman city of Pergamon, admiring its acropolis, temples and 10,000-seat theatre. From here, we drive south to Kusadasi, where the following day is free to relax after a busy day.

We’ll see the famous façade of the Celsus Library, mosaicked pedestrian walkways and roads scored with ruts from chariot wheels. We’ll also stop at the House of the Virgin Mary, just outside Ephesus, where Mary was believed to have spent her final years. Lunch will be a picnic in the sunny gardens of a cooperative in nearby Selcuk. Get involved with the cooking if you like, or simply sit back and enjoy your surroundings. While we’re here, you’ll have the chance to see how traditional carpets are hand-woven. After lunch, we’ll continue to our hotel in Pamukkale.
